This course studies the nature of the English language and its orthography from preschool to adults. Rationale and methods for instruction in phonics, structural analysis, decoding, spelling, dictionary, and their roles in reading, listening, speaking, viewing, and writing will be presented. Literacy approaches will also be explored with best practices recognizing accommodations for all types of learners. Assessment tools will be used to inform student progress in word decoding and drive individualized and group instruction.
