A focus of this course provides students with an understanding of formal and informal assessments and how to analyze the data results of those assessments. Special emphasis will be given to ESL, bilingual, and students with special needs. The assessments and strategies are chosen based on research-proven activities. All components of literacy: the emergent reader, word recognition, fluency, narrative and expository comprehension, and writing will be explored. Part of the course will deal with how an understanding of knowledge of how to communicate assessment data to the school community and students’ families as they are involved in learning will be addressed. Students will learn how various assessments are administered and analyzed with knowledge of student developmental and conceptual stages.
